Praxis: A Writing Center Journal is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published triannually by the University Writing Center at the University of Texas at Austin. As a forum for writing-center practitioners, Praxis publishes articles from writing-center consultants, administrators, and others concerned with issues related to writing-center training, consulting, labor, administration, and initiatives.

Our editorial board welcomes clearly written, scholarly essays (“focus articles”) on writing-center consulting, research, administration and training. Focus article submissions may be based in theoretical and critical approaches, applied practices, or empirical research (qualitative or quantitative). Focus article submissions are sent out to our national editorial board for blind review.

Praxis also welcomes responses to previous issues' articles (in the form of “column essays”), column essays on tutoring and consulting, blog posts and book reviews on subjects pertinent to writing center work. These submissions (columns, blog posts and book reviews) do not go through the peer-review process.

For information about submitting an article or the journal's blind review process, or to suggest themes for future issues, please email the Managing Editors at praxisuwc@gmail.com.

PRAXIS GUIDELINES

All submissions to Praxis should be emailed to the Managing Editors at praxisuwc@gmail.com.

Recommended length is 5000 to 8000 words for articles and 1000-1500 words for column essays and book reviews. Articles should conform to current MLA style. Please use double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt. font and one-inch margins. Please only use one space after a period. Please use italics rather than underlining (except with URL addresses) and keep italics to a minimum. Please use endnotes rather than footnotes. Please include Works Cited and endnotes in your total word count. Do not format your paper in any other way. Images, figures, and tables within the document should adhere to current MLA formatting guidelines and be sent as separate supplemental files in .jpeg format. When submitting your manuscript, please indicate in the subject line of your email if your document is to be considered for our “Focus Article,” “Column,” "Blog" or “Book Review” section.

As of Spring 2019, if your study incorporated human participants, we ask that your submission include a statement that your research received approval from your institution’s institutional review board (IRB), or your institution’s equivalent human subjects review board. We also ask that you indicate this approval, and that your research was conducted in accordance with your institution’s human research guidelines in your manuscript, as well.

Please include an abstract (under 250 words) with focus article submissions. Please also include brief biographies for all authors and keywords with ALL submissions. Previously published authors should include a fresh biography with each submission.

We expect that all submissions are original work, and that the work has not been simultaneously submitted for review or accepted for publication elsewhere. If your submission has been accepted for publication in any other venue (for example, in an edited collection or an institutional repository) or if you have questions about this policy, please email the editors to discuss any possible conflicts.

We also expect to see the dois or URLs included in the works cited (where applicable such as, for all peer-reviewed journal articles). See MLA guidelines for including those in the works cited.

The editors of Praxis reserve the right to reject any submission that does not conform to the journal's submission guidelines.

DEADLINES

We run three review cycles: one in the fall [Sep. 1-Nov. 1], one in the spring [Feb. 1-Mar. 15], and one in the summer [June 1-Aug. 1].

For consideration in the fall review cycle, please submit your manuscript by August 15.
For consideration in the spring review cycle, please submit your manuscript by January 15.
For consideration in the summer review cycle, please submit your manuscript by May 15.

Our current backlog means that publication of articles and columns generally occurs within a year of acceptance.

AXIS GUIDELINES

All submissions intended for the AXIS blog should be emailed to the Managing Editors at praxisuwc@gmail.com.

Recommended length is 750 words or fewer, but we have published longer pieces (between 1000 and 1500 words) before.

Because AXIS is on a bi-weekly schedule (new posts every other Wednesday) and because it is a blog, this is a good venue for writers with less experience or with a more informal, anecdotal approach to discussing writing centers; AXIS has hosted work from undergraduates, graduate students, and professional scholars. Unlike submissions for Praxis, we use an entirely in-house review process for AXIS submissions, meaning that you will generally receive a quick response from one of our editors. We encourage submissions of all kinds: anecdotes/advice about writing consultations, reflections on the benefits of writing center experience, etc. If you are not certain AXIS is the right venue for your idea, feel free to send us a 100-word pitch for your blog post, detailing its subject and expected length. When submitting something for possible inclusion in AXIS, please indicate in the subject line of your email whether you are sending a manuscript (.doc or .docx format, please) or a pitch.

As with Praxis, we expect that all submissions to AXIS are original work, and that the work has not been simultaneously submitted for review or accepted for publication elsewhere. If your submission has been accepted for publication in any other venue (for example, in an edited collection or an institutional repository) or if you have questions about this policy, please email the editors to discuss any possible conflicts or issues with attribution.
